In working our way through this subject, the mystery of Israel, I want to propose four general topic areas to consider. As I see it now, (I reserve the right to alter things as we proceed!) we will explore these four areas.
1. It is very important for us, first of all, to understand why this subject of Israel is not a side issue for all serious followers of Jesus. Why should it be relevant to all Christians, and not just to a small select group of believers who happen to be “into Israel?” Many Christians have decided to ignore the subject because they just do not understand it or because it is controversial or because it not critical to their salvation. I set forth the premise that this is important to God and should be important to all of us. So, to begin with, I will try to give you good reasons to take this subject on board and study to show yourself approved.
2. We will look into the scriptures, OT and NT, and see what it says about this subject. As bible believing Christians, we must understand the biblical basis for what we believe. We must be seekers of truth, biblical truth, being able to discern truth from fiction. We must be rooted and grounded in a biblical worldview so that we are not deceived by the strong opinion of others, the media or politics. This is one subject in which we are constantly being bombarded with aggressive opinions and agendas. We need to know God’s agenda and stand with him.
3. We need be prepared to lovingly answer Christians who take a different view and have a different theology. I believe this matter of Israel is being used to test hearts in all arenas, including christendom. I am very concerned that many believers are being set up for deception and will find themselves, even unknowingly, aligned against God. It is possible to take a stand on an issue for apparently good reasons, but end up in an unexpected and unwanted place.
4. Having established a biblical basis, we will apply it to the current crisis in the Middle East, which is fostering growing worldwide anti-semitism and anti-Israel bias in the media, the UN and even parts of the church. This will necessitate some historical context to have wise discernment.
My purpose is to equip you in as brief a way as possible. After all, this is a blog, not an exhaustive book. You will have a small “bite-sized” teaching 2-3 times a week. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. My goal is that you will be rooted and grounded in the truth, inoculated against deception in the last days, able to discuss current events intelligently, and know how to pray.
Paul says in Romans 11:25-26 that this subject is a mystery. If you have followed my previous series on personal revelation you will be ready and equipped to understand what this means. If you have not read the series, may I recommend you do so before we continue together? If there is any “mystery” the devil will fight against and try to keep hidden it is this one, the mystery of Israel. We are in a spiritual battle for truth and understanding, so I would like you to personalize Paul’s pray in Ephesians 1:17-18:
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you (me) the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your (my) understanding being enlightened; that you (I) may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints
Let’s continue to pray together: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. God, as we launch out in this adventure together, may your name be glorified and may our understanding of the mystery of Israel further your plans in my life, in the church, and on the earth. Lord, I pray that you will give me wisdom and spiritual understanding as I seek to know your Word and your heart. Remove from me any spiritual blindness and establish truth in my inmost being. Speak to my head and heart regarding Israel and the Jewish people and may I have your heart in the matter of current events. Cleanse me of any hidden lies or biases that I may have. I pray that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, will teach me and show me the deep things of God. I pray these to the glory of Jesus and for his name’s sake. Amen.”
